Seven Passages About Spiritual Keys
Seven Passages About Spiritual Keys:
The first reference to a key is physical.
Judges 3:25 And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.
You will often find that in Scripture as a recurring theme - ie. first something, someone, some place is presented to us in the Bible physically (in other words, literally), then it might be used later symbolically or spiritually (for example, there are seven names from the Old Testament that are used symbolically in the book of Revelation - study those OT passages to determine what the symbol means and why they are used in various passages in Revelation). I don't think you will ever find a symbol used before the physical reality is made known. This puts Bible interpretation in danger when someone tries to take actual history (such as the first 11 chapters of Genesis) and make it symbolic. There may also be spiritual lessons taught in various passages, but you can be sure God meant them literally first and foremost.
Then there are seven passages about spiritual keys (five keys used referred to in seven verses):
1. The Key of David -
2. The Keys of the Kingdom of Heaven -
Matthew 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
3. The Key of Knowledge -
Luke 11:52 Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.
4. The Keys of Hell and of Death -
Revelation 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.
5. The Key of the Bottomless Pit -
