Some Sevens From Isaiah 61
Some Sevens From Isaiah 61:
1) There are seven verses that refer to mourning (sighing) and joy together, one turning into the other:
A) Esther 9:22 As the days wherein the Jews rested from their enemies, and the month which was turned unto them from sorrow to joy, and from mourning into a good day: that they should make them days of feasting and joy, and of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the poor.
B) Isaiah 35:10 And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
C) Isaiah 51:11 Therefore the redeemed of the LORD shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.
D) Isaiah 61:3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.
E) Jeremiah 31:13 Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together: for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.
F) Lamentations 5:15 The joy of our heart is ceased; our dance is turned into mourning.
G) James 4:9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
2) Isaiah 61:1-2:
The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me
1) to preach good tidings unto the meek;
2) he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
3) to proclaim liberty to the captives,
4) and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
5) To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD,
6) and the day of vengeance of our God;
7) to comfort all that mourn;
Quoted in Luke 4:18-19; 7:22
There are two sevenfold lists in verses 1-3. For the first one, see above. For the second one, see #3 below.
3) Isaiah 61:2-3:
To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God;
1) to comfort all that mourn;
2) To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion,
3) to give unto them beauty for ashes,
4) the oil of joy for mourning,
5) the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;
6) that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD,
7) that he might be glorified.
A sevenfold list of the Lord comforting His people.
4) Luke 4:18-19:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because
1) he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor;
2) he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted,
3) to preach deliverance to the captives,
4) and recovering of sight to the blind,
5) to set at liberty them that are bruised,
6) To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
Quoting from Isaiah 61:1-2.
Including the phrase that Jesus does not quote here from Isaiah 61:2 (the day of vengeance of our God), there are seven things listed that Jesus did or preached in fulfillment of this passage (the seventh will be fulfilled when Christ returns again - the Day of the Lord).
