Seventy Descendants, And Seventy People Going Into Egypt

Seventy Descendants, And Seventy People Going Into Egypt:

1) The world divided into 70 nations by God after the tower of Babel:

In Genesis chapter 10, we have the breakdown of how the world was divided Nimrod's attempt to build the tower of Babel. God scattered rebellious man, and divided the nations of the world according to the number of descendants of Noah's three sons (who comprised ALL of the world's population at that time).

Genesis 10:1 Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood.

70 nations descended from the sons of Noah - Japheth, Ham, and Shem - and repopulated the world after the flood.

Consider this breakdown of their children:

Japheth - 14 nations.

Genesis 10:2-5 The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras. And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah. And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.

Ham - 30 nations.

Genesis 10:6-7, 13-18, 20 And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan. And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabtecha: and the sons of Raamah; Sheba, and Dedan...  And Mizraim begat Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim, And Pathrusim, and Casluhim, (out of whom came Philistim,) and Caphtorim. And Canaan begat Sidon his firstborn, and Heth, And the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgasite, And the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite, And the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite: and afterward were the families of the Canaanites spread abroad... These are the sons of Ham, after their families, after their tongues, in their countries, and in their nations.

Shem - 26 nations.

Genesis 10:21-31 Unto Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder, even to him were children born. The children of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram. And the children of Aram; Uz, and Hul, and Gether, and Mash. And Arphaxad begat Salah; and Salah begat Eber. And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother's name was Joktan. And Joktan begat Almodad, and Sheleph, and Hazarmaveth, and Jerah, And Hadoram, and Uzal, and Diklah, And Obal, and Abimael, and Sheba, And Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab: all these were the sons of Joktan. And their dwelling was from Mesha, as thou goest unto Sephar a mount of the east. These are the sons of Shem, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, after their nations.

Genesis 10:32 These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: and by these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood.

70 nations descended from the sons of Noah and repopulated the world after the flood. The Bible makes another connection to these 70 descendants, which is interesting:

Deuteronomy 32:7-8 Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask thy father, and he will shew thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee. When the most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel.

God's Word says He divided the nations at the tower of Babel according to their number when they went into Egypt. Another 70. God's number 7, times 10, the number of the world.

2) The 70 children of Jacob that went down into Egypt.

Genesis 46:26-27 All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his loins, besides Jacob's sons' wives, all the souls were threescore and six; And the sons of Joseph, which were born him in Egypt, were two souls: all the souls of the house of Jacob, which came into Egypt, were threescore and ten.

Exodus 1:5 And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already.

Genesis 46:6-7 And they took their cattle, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob, and all his seed with him: His sons, and his sons' sons with him, his daughters, and his sons' daughters, and all his seed brought he with him into Egypt.

Genesis 46:8-15 And these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacob's firstborn. And the sons of Reuben; Hanoch, and Phallu, and Hezron, and Carmi.

And the sons of Simeon; Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jachin, and Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanitish woman.

And the sons of Levi; Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

And the sons of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Pharez, and Zerah: but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. And the sons of Pharez were Hezron and Hamul.

And the sons of Issachar; Tola, and Phuvah, and Job, and Shimron.

And the sons of Zebulun; Sered, and Elon, and Jahleel.

These be the sons of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob in Padanaram, with his daughter Dinah: all the souls of his sons and his daughters were thirty and three.

From the above passage, we see the breakdown of Jacob’s children with Leah - six sons (and their children), and one daughter, Dinah, going with Jacob into Egypt - totalling 33 souls:

Jacob (1 soul)
Reuben - Hanoch, Phallu, Hezron, and Carmi (5 souls)
Simeon - Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul (7 souls)
Levi - Gershon, Kohath, and Merari (4 souls)
Judah - Shelah, Pharez, and Zerah
- Grandchildren through Pharez: Hezron, and Hamul (6 souls)
Issachar - Tola, Phuvah, Job, and Shimron (5 souls)
Zebulon - Sered, Elon, Jahleel (4 souls)
Dinah (1 soul)

Add that all up and that equals 33 people.

Genesis 46:16-18 And the sons of Gad; Ziphion, and Haggi, Shuni, and Ezbon, Eri, and Arodi, and Areli.

And the sons of Asher; Jimnah, and Ishuah, and Isui, and Beriah, and Serah their sister: and the sons of Beriah; Heber, and Malchiel.

These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter, and these she bare unto Jacob, even sixteen souls.

The sons and granddaughter of Jacob by Zilpah, Leah’s handmaid, which came into Egypt with him (16 souls):

Gad - Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli (8 souls)
Asher - Jimnah, Ishuah, Isui, Beriah, and Serah
Grandchildren through Beriah: Heber, and Malchiel (8 souls)

16 children and grandchildren through Zilpah.

Genesis 46:19-22 The sons of Rachel Jacob's wife; Joseph, and Benjamin.

And unto Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, which Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On bare unto him.

And the sons of Benjamin were Belah, and Becher, and Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman, Ehi, and Rosh, Muppim, and Huppim, and Ard.

These are the sons of Rachel, which were born to Jacob: all the souls were fourteen.

The sons and grandsons of Jacob by Rachel that came into Egypt with him (14 souls):

Joseph - Manasseh, and Ephraim (3 souls) - already in Egypt by this time

Benjamin - Belah, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard (11 souls)

Here we see the number agreeing, 14 souls, children and grandchildren through Rachel.

Genesis 46:23-25 And the sons of Dan; Hushim.

And the sons of Naphtali; Jahzeel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shillem.

These are the sons of Bilhah, which Laban gave unto Rachel his daughter, and she bare these unto Jacob: all the souls were seven.

The sons of Jacob by Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid, that came into Egypt with him (7 souls):

Dan - Hushim (2 souls)
Naphtali - Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem (5 souls)

Bilhah's children and grandchildren equal 14 souls.

Add all those subtotals up:
33 + 16 + 14 + 7 = 70 souls, exactly like this main passage says.

There is a Bible difficulty dealing with the number of people who went into Egypt. If you like studying out things of that nature, please read the following study where I put all the passages together and show the Bible is not in error: How Many Souls Went Into Egypt With Jacob?

*For clarification: When a multiple of a number is used, it has the same meaning as the original number. For example, seven means perfection, completion, and is God's stamp on His Word. A multiple of seven has the same meaning, sometimes heightening or magnifying it, but the same underlying meaning. So 14, 21, 70, 490, etc. all have the same symbolic meaning in the Scriptures. There are so many sevens in the Bible, but you will often find many passages where a multiple of seven is used as well. Like here.
